Abstract:

This paper continues work begun by the authors last year to specify the error structure in reports of consumer expenditures in the BLS Consumer Expenditure Quarterly Survey. Using data from 1996-1998, a further examination of the relationships between respondent characteristics and classification errors for various expenditures will be conducted, and final predictive models for each expenditure category will be specified. As part of this analysis, differences between weighted and unweighted models will be evaluated, and alternative specifications for the structural and error components of the latent-class models will be explored. Using crosstabulations, the nature of the relationships between the respondent characteristics and classification errors will be identified. Based on this information, a methodology for estimating the value of missing expenditures will be developed.
