Abstract:

In this talk I will present the rationale and results of using 15 unique data sets for individual take-home and midterm and final examinations in introductory statistics. I created these data sets so that students are actually tested on skills that relate to a fundamental goal of the course, i.e. being able to "do" statistics when they finish. Students write a data analysis report, for which they are graded 50% on their presentation and 50% on their statistical accuracy. A sequence of team-data analysis reports with a single birth weight data set prepares students for these take-home examinations. Both the exams and the data will be available for public use.
