Title: The Impact of a First-Year Experience Course on Student Retention

Abstract:

First-year experience courses are often lauded for increasing freshman-to-sophomore retention rates at colleges and universities. Among the goals of these courses are improved academic skills, better definition of career plans, higher levels of student satisfaction, and enhancement of individual-institutional fit.

This presentation compares expected retention results for a group of students who participated in such a course to actual results for a group which did not have the same experience. Logistic regression techniques are used to analyze the impact on retention of factors such as family income, financial aid, gender, ethnicity, and academic background.
