Abstract:
|
American communities with established immigrant communities are popular destinations for newly arriving immigrants. These choices may reflect the attractiveness of economic and cultural opportunities or other amenities, but there may also be underlying dynamics as social networks facilitate migration and adjustment and the immigration system includes sponsorship of family members by residents and naturalized citizens. For a select sample of recently naturalized citizens living in New York City, residential mobility levels are examined between times of admission and naturalization. Certainly, New York City was among the first major cities in mobilizing for citizenship assistance, and policymakers have otherwise sought to advance immigrant integration. Recent naturalization levels, an apparent shift to embracing U.S. citizenship, and immigration mechanisms carry implications for future population growth of New York City.
