Abstract:

This session will be devoted to the problems and challenges facing governmental and international statistical agencies in the Global World. International statistical co-ordination is a widely recognized issue since the XIXth century and the need for harmonization and standardization is increasing because of the economic and monetary integration processes, the liberalization of the world trade, the development of multinational firms, and the globalization of the economy. Members of the panel, who all have a very important background in national or international agencies (sometimes both), will discuss why it's necessary to seek internationally comparable information; what information is to be collected; and how it is to be collected, published and disseminated (methods and institutions). The question of the respective role of national and international agencies will be raised, as well as the importance of a cooperation between official agencies and statistical societies, like the ASA at national level or ISI at the international one.
