Abstract:

This timely panel session responds to the "Criteria Document" recently published by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The Criteria Document brings together recent research on the effects of particulate air pollution on community level mortality and morbidity. The Criteria Document forms the scientific basis for proposed revisions of regulatory standards for ambient particulate air pollution in US cities.

The panelists will address a variety of statistical issues arising from the recent studies reviewed in the Criteria Document. These issues include time series modeling of air pollution health effects, adjustments for weather variation and co-pollutants, exposure-response estimation, the relation between personal exposure and ambient pollutant levels, model selection biases, and hierarchical models for multi-city studies.
