Abstract:

This talk will deal with subjects that we should be teaching students who are aiming to become industrial statisticians--but often do not. We will first discuss non-technical topics, such as how to best prepare for a job in industry, our view of the role of an industrial statistician, and what it takes to succeed in today's environment. We will then turn to more technical topics, such as recommendations on courses to take (and, by inference, to be offered) and important subject matters that warrant inclusion and emphasis in such courses. A key conclusion is that we must move beyond traditional consulting to more proactive and leadership-oriented roles.
