The academic biostatistician often feels overwhelmed--engaging students in biostatistics and the health sciences, consulting and collaborating on health-science studies, and carrying out methodological research. Couple those demands with the realities of leading a biostatistics department within a major health center and the task looks daunting. Michael O'Fallon was head of the Section of Biostatistics at the Mayo Clinic from 1975 to 1994 and Chair of the Department of Health Sciences Research from 1994 to 2000. Through a discussion with panelists Barbara Tilley and Ralph O'Brien, and with audience members, Dr. O'Fallon will provide candid insight on the rewards and problems involved in running such a department. Among the issues to be discussed will be: What is the appropriate mixture of teaching, consulting, and research efforts, and how does the biostatistics leader maintain institutional support for such a mixture? How is quality assured over all these components? What administrative, budgetary, and governance issues are important? What are the professional risks and rewards for such a leader?
