Abstract:

Biostatisticians in a medical school setting may have contact with a wide variety of individuals involved in clinical research, including medical students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and research staff. Often, the first contact is in conjunction with a specific question or circumstance related to study design or data analysis. While the consultee seeks assistance for this concern, the consultant oftentimes needs to address a wider scope to place the problem into the proper perspective and respond appropriately. This invites a discussion about study design features and analytical issues beyond the specific item that motivated the initial contact. Consulting experiences in a large clinical research setting and examples of opportunities for general training in study design and biostatistical topics during routine biostatistical consultations are described.
