Abstract:

The drug-addicted population is very difficult to study in clinical trials because of their lack of adherence to protocol scheduling requirements. Subjects are usually requested to attend clinic multiple times per week for the duration of the treatment. As a consequence, there are high drop out rates, many missed visits, and missing or invalid observations. The drug-addicted population has many interrelated problems which leads to the desire to examine multiple outcomes (e.g., retention and substance use). Techniques used in practice to address sample size issues, handling of missing data, and multiple outcomes are presented, along with a brief discussion of these techniques.
