Abstract:
|
The survey methods field increasingly must deal with the very difficult issue of developing questionnaires that operate effectively across a diverse set of language and cultural groups, and that provide data that can be considered to be comparable across groups. Recently, a number of investigators have been advocating the development of "best practices" in this regard, based not only on the conduct of empirical studies, but as well on the incorporation of disciplines such as cultural anthropology into the practice of questionnaire development. The discussion will include views of the current state-of-the-art in cross-cultural questionnaire development, types of language translation practices, culturally-oriented pretesting techniques, and other practices that appear to be worthy of further development and evaluation.
