Abstract:
|
In this paper, we propose to use the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) to estimate the volume under the ROC surface, a generalized ROC curve analysis proposed by Yang and Carlin . We show that the MLE is a consistent estimator, having an asymptotic normal distribution. The findings allow us to construct confidence interval for the volume index of a diagnostic test and to compare volume indices for different diagnostic assays. A numerical integration method for computing the MLE estimator of the volume index is also proposed. The use of the method is illustrated through a simulation study.
