Abstract:

Understanding the behavior of heart period data and its successive differences is critical to artifact identification and dynamics of cardiac control. Time domain measures based on successive heart period differences are used in studying the variations in heart period to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment procedures. We examined the distribution of successive beat-to-beat differences in nine normal healthy undergraduate students under defined baseline conditions. Our analysis reveals that the heart period, as well as the successive differences of heart period, has non-normal statistical distributions. In the absence of artifacts in the study interval, the successive differences exhibited symmetry about zero, and the absolute differences followed a Weibull distribution, as reflected by the Kolmogorov Smirnov goodness-of-fit test. Our approach attempts to completely characterize the statistical and the distributional properties of the successive heart period differences and explore the time domain measures of heart rate variability, such as the root mean square successive difference (RMSSD) and Ewing's measure (RR50 count).
