Abstract:

After some introductory comments, the tension between theory and application intrinsic to any essentially practical subject with a strong theoretical base is discussed. The tension becomes manifest in various ways. These raise challenges both educational and more immediately practical. How important or unimportant are theories of inference, have modern computational developments radically changed the core of the subject and indeed what is that core, how can high standards of study design and data quality be achieved, and so on? Examples from various fields, including hydrology, human and veterinary epidemiology, sociology and public policy, are used in illustration.
