Abstract:
|
Much of the teaching that my colleagues and I do occurs outside of the classroom setting--guiding students in their consultations with investigators, developing thesis and dissertation proposals, and offering advice on professional development and career choices, as examples. It's important that we be as thoughtful and prepared for these occasions as we are when we lecture, lead a class discussion, or prepare and grade an exam. I'll present a few strategies culled from my own and colleagues' experiences that help both mentors and students seize those unexpected opportunities for teaching and learning.
