Description

This workshop describes the content of a recent introductory statistics course taught at the presenter's institution from a baseball perspective. One goal of the class is to make statistics fun by teaching the material in the context of baseball. This class is taught to students who are genuinely interested in baseball, but may not be familiar with many of the common baseball statistics used to rate hitters and pitchers. The topics of this course include data analysis for one and two variables, elementary probability, and topics in statistical inference. Special features of the course are described, including comparison of teams and players, and simulation of baseball games by means of tabletop games. Resources for teaching a sports statistics class are outlined, including data sources and courses taught at other universities.
