Description

Social statistics involves novel ways of collecting and presenting data to inform and influence policy. Two papers consider spatial distributions with consequences for equity. One analyzes the distribution of state property taxes; the other considers the distribution of more or less reliable voting machinery, an important issue coming out of the last election. The next two papers report findings from novel analyses of national surveys: on attitudes about food safety and biotechnology, and on substance use among teenagers (focusing on effects of peer influences). The next paper describes the setup for research use of confidential data at the National Center for Health Statistics. Finally, two speakers reflect on presentation of statistical results in the policy analysis and legal contexts.
