Description

The federal government's classifications systems for both industry and occupation have undergone major revisions within the past five years to better meet the needs of data users, while maintaining as much historical comparability as practicable. Both the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the revised Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system were used to code and tabulate the responses to the 2000 decennial census and will be used for future household surveys. This session will describe the process for evaluating the 2000 coding system and present preliminary results on the automated and clerical systems, the efforts to develop crosswalks to bridge the data with earlier classification indexes, and the impact of the optical character reader technology (OCR)on data quality. Those interested in understanding labor and product markets must understand these results in order to produce appropriate analysis in the future.
