This study aims to develop a comparable Japanese translation of the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Cancer survey, which is known to reliably assess cancer patients’ experiences in the United States. In close communication with AHRQ, we translated and modified the survey. Applicability was assessed using the pilot test among cancer survivors registered with the survey research company. To assess the structural validity and comparability, confirmatory factor analysis was performed assuming the same six composites with the English version. A total of 536 cancer patients participated in the survey. Of six originally expected composites, almost all items had factor loadings between items and their hypothesized composites higher than 0.4. However, an item expected to belong to “care coordination” had relatively low factor loading. All categories except for “care coordination” had high internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha higher than 0.7. Given the systemic differences in care delivery between Japan and the United States, disparity between the factors have been anticipated. Further research is required to improve the comparability.
