Past ideas about race, ethnicity, sex, gender, and sexual orientation- including racism, sexism, and homophobia- have shaped the world we live in today. This town hall will explore the ways health policy researchers can shape the future by improving the way we design studies and collect and analyze data related to these important determinants of health. Lauren Samuels will give a brief overview of current and historical understandings of sex, gender, race, and ethnicity. Maya Taylor will compare US health surveys that collect data on sexual orientation and gender identity and will provide new estimates on access to care and health outcomes for sexual and gender minorities using data from two large national surveys. Kim Hart will discuss the impact of gender and race on participation in clinical research, the consequences of lack of participation, and best practices for enrollment and data collection. Rachel Hardeman, looking through the lens of gendered racism, will discuss the salience of an intersectional framing in our data in order to achieve reproductive health equity. We will encourage discussion from other attendees.
