Although a growing number of health plans and providers are obtaining race/ethnicity data to identifying disparities, they continue to be challenged by how to efficiently and effectively use the data to target interventions to address disparities. One promising strategy to help overcome these challenges is use of emerging Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping and decision tools. We present results of our initial work with these tools to support plans participating in the National Health Plan Collaborative to Improve Quality and Reduce Disparities. In particular, we provide examples from selected plans of how these tools can help plans (and provider groups) more effectively target their disparities efforts at regional and local levels. Methodological issues and opportunities are briefly discussed.
