In recent years, Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ) has been working to maximise the use of Goods and Services Tax (GST) data in the production of quarterly financial statistics. This design has now largely been implemented. We are now focusing our attention on integrating our labour market demand-side measures into the same statistical design. Here we are looking to maximise the use of PAYE (payroll) administrative data into the production of these labour market statistics. We are implementing a coherent, multi-source design to produce quarterly financial and labour market statistics – using the same managed (survey) collection, standardised methodologies, systems, and analytical environment where we add can significant value to our customers. We discuss the benefits, opportunities and challenges in implementing this standardised design in the production of economic statistics.
