SAMHSA sponsors two annual establishment surveys with behavioral health facilities: the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) and the National Mental Health Services Survey (N-MHSS). Each survey requires a series of mailout materials to increase response rates, particularly with non-responding facilities. This presentation will discuss several approaches and experiments that have been conducted to determine the effectiveness of specific mailout strategies to encourage participation in both surveys. Presenters will provide concrete examples of these strategies, in particular an experiment using FedEx envelopes to reach out non-responding facilities and how that increased response rates in both surveys.
