Keywords: response burden, Standard business reporting, sharing data
For many years, Statistical Offices have worked to reduce the response burden on enterprises. In this endeavour, focus has been on both measuring and managing the burden. Strategies have involved mitigating burden communication strategies and instrument design. The use of alternative data sources is also a way forward. In order to reduce response burden significantly further steps are possible and necessary. At Statistics Sweden, we are now moving further towards reducing burden by redesigning data collections in order to effectively use administrative data and to collect data that is readily available in the business systems of enterprises. Much of the work is devoted to learning what data is available, and how to extract and transfer it to the Statistical Office. This work highlights that reporting data to the Statistical Office is only a part of the total administrative burden on businesses. In order to reduce the total burden on businesses, cooperation between governmental agencies is crucial. In initiatives such as Standard Business Reporting (SBR) and Nordic Smart Government, agencies work together to find new ways of sharing data in a digitalized society.
