Data integration: the evolution of use of administrative data in business statistics (310018)

*Colin Hanley, Central Statistics Office Ireland
Sorcha O'Callaghan, Central Statistics Office Ireland

Administrative data has become an important source for business statistics in the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The increased demand from users and policymakers for more timely and granular information on enterprises is difficult to meet through traditional data collection methods without increasing cost and burden. Integrating administrative data into our processes has given the CSO the opportunity to develop new outputs that met these demands. We will discuss how integrating administrative data in the CSO has evolved over time. From using administrative data to create the frame on the Central Business Register and how its used in business survey processes to developing new products through data linking. We’ll discuss the challenges of using administrative data and the opportunities it presents, giving examples of new statistical products developed by linking administrative data.
