Keywords: SAMHSA, inventory, listing, surveys, mental health, substance use, behavioral health

This presentation will start by providing an overview of the BHSIS program as a context for the session. One of the first topics to cover in the session is the creation of the Inventory of Behavioral Health Services (I-BHS), which is an electronic national inventory of behavioral health facilities maintained by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in cooperation with the States. The I-BHS contains basic information about each facility such as name, location address, mailing address, telephone number, director name, and general services offered. Keeping the I-BHS current is of critical importance to the BHSIS program. The I-BHS is updated with information received from state representatives who license/approve the facilities that the I-BHS contains, in addition to facilities themselves who update their information during the annual surveys. The presentation will include details on how facilities are identified by using secondary sources such as databases from the American Hospital Association, the National Council for Behavioral Health and the American Business Index. The presentation will explain the screening process for substance abuse and mental health treatment facilities known to SAMHSA, including facilities that have been approved by their State's behavioral health agency as well as facilities that are not state-approved.
