Every two years the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) commissions the U.S. Census Bureau to collect data on all private primary and secondary schools in America through the Private School Universe Survey (PSS). With a current list of approximately 40,000 schools, the PSS is the largest federal government school level survey in the U.S. The PSS captures key characteristics of private schools in the U.S. such as the number of private schools, their religious affiliations, student/teacher ratios, etc. As a longitudinal census, the PSS serves a dual role by providing other studies, such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), with a list of private schools for their frame development. The PSS is comprised of three frame development operations: the Traditional Frame (K-12 schools); the Early Childhood Care Frame; and the Area Search Frame. This poster will provide an overview of the frame creation process by detailing procedures for the Traditional, Early Childhood Care, and Area Frame collection, frame maintenance, capturing new growth and closures, and frame quality control.
