Individuals arrested for drug misuse can be sentenced to correctional facilities or participate in problem solving courts (PSCs) - dockets that treat underlying issues contributing to criminal behavior. This study compares outcomes of individuals in correctional facilities to those in Indiana PSCs from 01/01/2018 – 06/30/2021.
Sentencing records are frequently incomplete and unstandardized. Qualitative interviews were critical to understand more fully and accurately the types of interventions offered. First, a written survey collected background information. Second, a virtual in-person interview identified inclusionary and exclusionary criteria, and other programmatic data.
The interviews were coded in two ways. First, NVivo identified common themes. Second, coding captured specific services. These data will be linked with existing datasets at Indiana’s Management Performance Hub. Histories will be created that describe the services individuals were provided and morbidity/mortality outcomes as measured by ED presentations, EMS calls, hospitalization, rearrest, and death at 2 week, 4 week, 6 month, and 1 year intervals post-release. Impactful interventions will be identified.
