Statisticians work in many environments across academia, industry, and government. In cross-disciplinary and collaborative professional settings, power skills like communication, decision making, and mindfulness are key skills. Though different types of jobs have varying goals and considerations, several aspects of these power skills apply across industries and throughout a statistician’s career. Statisticians communicate with scientific and non-scientific colleagues on day-to-day collaborations, brief leaders and decision-makers, and even lead conversations with the media and the public. Effective communication in all of these settings involves conveying your message efficiently yet clearly and understanding your audience to engage and involve them in the conversation. This panel consists of successful applied statisticians in a variety of fields who will discuss strategies for effective statistical communication and broadly applicable power skills that both compliment and go beyond expertise in statistical methodologies.
