In their formal training, statisticians and data scientists are taught theory and application of statistical modeling. However, being an effective data scientist requires a breadth of knowledge spanning the entire data lifespan from creation to communication of results. The collaborative “full-stack” data scientist must understand organizational needs, handle administrative duties, have excellent technical understanding, and work with enterprise data to be successful. This course will discuss best practices for tackling common problems that aren’t commonly included in graduate education. These discussions will be facilitated by the three presenters, who are young professionals in industry, government, and academia, and will compare and contrast approaches across the three domains. The presenters will share their experiences working on data pipelines, collaborative coding projects, and the presentation of statistical results. They will also discuss the tools and skills used that made these projects successful, and share lessons learned from those that were not.
