Have you ever felt like a fraud, deemed yourself underqualified, or attributed your success to chance? Imposter syndrome (IS) is a condition where one doubts their skills, abilities, accomplishments or talents with feelings of fraudulently-obtained success. IS can be detrimental to productive work relationships and disproportionately affects high-achievers and individuals from under-represented or disadvantaged backgrounds. In this presentation, we examine the influences of IS on individuals from under-represented groups in the statistical and data sciences. We discuss repercussions of IS to our personal career development and its impacts on organizational growth and diversity. We recommend individual development strategies that encourage open dialogue, social support, and mentorship. Lastly, we discuss how leaders from multiple disciplines can create environments that invite all to ask questions, grow from experiences, and transform inner uncertainties into positive synergistic team dynamics.
