Thoughts on Communicating Statistics in a Post p<0.05 World: Know Your Audience(s) (304220)

*Nicole Lazar, Pennsylvania State University

Calls to move beyond statistical significance will be successful to the extent that we can communicate the message clearly and effectively to scientists and the general public. Many are already open to change, brought about in part by frustration with statistics as currently practiced in their disciplines or as presented in the popular press. There is still, however, great opportunity in this relatively uncharted territory for the statistics profession to enhance understanding of fundamental issues of statistical inference and how scientific results are conveyed. In this talk, I will share some thoughts on how to communicate to students and collaborators -- two important audiences -- about the push to change, what it means for their work, and how we can navigate the current controversies together.
