Developing Well-Rounded Statistical Collaboration Skills with Case-Based Learning (304160)

*Mario Davidson, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
Regina Russell, Vanderbilt University

Case-based Learning has been an effective approach in health care education; however, the statistics field has utilized the approach sparingly. It has been used to help students determine the appropriate methodology and think critically about real-life problems. Case-based learning may also be utilized in learning exemplary behavior, professionalism, role-modeling, leadership, teamwork, inquiry, hypotheses, supervision, ethics, and advanced communication skills.

This presentation describes the implementation of an innovative case-based learning approach to teaching these topics in a statistical collaboration course. Cases focus on real-world examples to develop more well-rounded and effective statisticians. A survey of former students (N=33) was conducted. On a scale of zero to one hundred where one hundred was most favorable of case-based learning, the median score of those who would recommend case-based learning was seventy-five. Of those who had professional experience, the median score was eighty-two. An example case, training, and suggestions for implementation for case-based learning are provided.
