Quick, But Can We Get It Right?

A Proposed Methodology for Executing a Survey Under an Aggressive Timeline (When You Know Nothing) (304150)

*Darius Singpurwalla, National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics

Keywords: surveys, statistical communication, questionnaire design, psychometric properties of question

Oftentimes, policy-makers will ask researchers to provide them information on an unfamiliar topic in and under a rapid timeline. Internet panels have provided researchers a tool that they can use to collect survey data from respondents much quicker than traditional methods. However, when executing a new study, data collection is only part of the survey process. Researchers must also define concepts, develop measurement items, analyze, and disseminate the data under these rapid timelines. During this talk, the presenter will share his experiences in conducting such a task through a case-study. He will propose a methodology that will enable a researcher to execute a quick turn around survey by engaging subject matter experts to identify key constructs and construct measurement items. Then he will demonstrate how the online panels were used to refine these measurement items into psychometrically valid questions. The analysis and dissemination tasks will also be discussed.
