Keywords: decision support tools

Access to information is a prerequisite to make informed decisions. Without information decisions can only be made from best guesses. Open access to information promotes knowledge-based decision making, improves transparency, accountability, and stimulates innovation and creation of goods and services. But, access to data does not guarantee the citizen participation. The science has to be made accessible as well. Most of the science is still largely “trapped” in 1000s of pages of publications – requiring new forms of communication. This research documents the development of DST for people recreating in the lead (Pb) contaminated CDA river basin. Children recreating in these areas may be at risk from Pb exposure. To make this information accessible to the public, we created a DST to answer a simple question: What is the risk of Pb exposure if you recreate in a particular location in CdA area? Users pinpoint location(s) on a map, select type of outdoor activities and the length of their trip. Mathematical and statistical models use the information provided to generate on the interface the Pb exposure risk. A pilot study tested the DST. The tools will be presented at the meeting.
