Statistical Advocacy: Making Room for Myself at the Table (304055)
*Megan Elyse Lutz, University of GeorgiaKeywords: Statistical Advocacy, Computer science education, social sciences, interdisciplinary research
In July 2019, I participated in a working group at the Annual Conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education (ITiCSE). Our working group focused on identifying skills and abilities associated with success in computer science (CS), and assessing without prior CS experience so that they may be placed in an appropriately paced introductory CS course. Although I had no background in computer science education (CSE), I was accepted into the working group because of my expertise in measurement, assessment, and statistics. As an experience report, this poster will include my reflections on the current state of quantitative methods and reporting in CSE. Additionally, I will describe how I experienced the openness of the CSE community to statisticians and their awareness of the need for inclusion of statisticians and other quantitative experts in their research process. Finally, I will outline how I believe we can introduce ourselves and work with the CSE community to support them.
