While statisticians are certainly influencing the decision-making of leaders in their organizations, we typically don’t see statisticians leading organizations unless those organizations are directly related to the field of statistics. The speaker will lead participants in visualizing themselves as a leader of an organization and then describe opportune organizational conditions for statisticians (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree) to lead various types of organizations. The speaker will describe two remote, volunteer leadership roles she has undertaken within grassroots organizations and will compare those roles, skills needed, and skills gained. Results of a membership survey from one grassroots organization will be presented as a strategy that can be used to set the stage for leading an organization. The speaker will engage the audience to reflect on ways to integrate volunteer experiences into a professional profile for career advancement.
