Creating and sustaining strong relationships with domain experts is key for statisticians and data scientists to become effective collaborators. In this talk we detail the aspect of Relationships in collaborations, which caps the ASCCR (Attitude Structure Content Communication Relationship) framework for learning essential collaboration skills. We will describe a theoretical model of collaborative relationships, with facets of commitment, mutual understanding, authenticity, honesty, and trust. We will place this theoretical model into the everyday context of statisticians by discussing practical advice to overcome common challenges in collaborative relationships, how statisticians can invite/influence domain experts to improve relationships, and what to do in the case that a professional relationship is not worth continuing. Participants will observe short videos and presenter role plays to practice identifying the facets of relationships. They will identify their relationship strengths as well as current challenges and opportunities to create and sustain relationships. Participants will conclude this session by determining next steps for strengthening specific work relationships.
