Collaboration skills are essential for success as a statistician or data scientist. In this talk we detail the Attitude of Collaboration, which is the foundation of the ASCCR (Attitude, Structure, Content, Communication, Relationship) framework for learning essential collaboration skills. We will describe our theory of the Attitude of Collaboration, which begins with two concepts of emotional intelligence—self-awareness and self-management—and includes committing to both the task of the project—including achieving shared goals and making deep contributions to the domain—and creating and sustaining a productive relationship with the domain expert. Participants will assess their personal attitudes from an inventory of attitudes that enhance effectiveness as collaborators or detract from collaboration. We will provide practical advice on how to develop and sustain a collaborative attitude. Participants will conclude this session by identifying personal opportunities to improve their attitude of collaboration with specific people on specific projects in their professional environment.
