Effectively tracking clinical research metrics is an essential part of any research project or clinical trial. While project tracking has historically come through regularly scheduled progress reports, dashboards are an alternative that provides continuously updated, on-demand access to the data needed to help projects succeed. The upfront cost and/or effort to deploy a dashboard, however, can often be a deterrent to its utilization within clinical research. In this presentation we look at a clinical application of Flexdashboard, a free library from RStudio, as an efficient, cost-effective method for dashboard development. We show how Flexdashboard leverages R, R Markdown and Shiny simultaneously, allowing you to rapidly build and deploy interactive dashboards that are easily accessible for all co-investigators for tracking enrollment, adverse events, survey completion or other key metrics involved in clinical trial protocol adherence. We also dissect a recently constructed dashboard to illustrate how the basic building blocks of Flexdashboard can be expanded upon to build a truly dynamic tool capable of meeting the needs of any investigator.
