*Kirsten Elise Eilertson, The Pennsylvania State UniversityKeywords: mission statements, ethical values, performance metrics
This poster explores the role of mission statements, what they can do for a consulting group or center, and how to use them wisely. Mission statements can be a very useful tool for identifying appropriate collaborators and clients, prioritizing opportunities, and highlighting the contribution your group plays within a larger organization. The goal of this poster is to explore how a mission statement can be used to attain longterm success and stability. Discussion points will include the benefits and drawbacks associated with having a statement; example statements and how they vary across groups and institution types; metrics to evaluate the success of your group with respect to your mission; reconciliation of time and resources with the mission; and avoidance of pitfalls such as having an unachievable mission. This discussion may also illuminate the ways different arenas of statistical practice vary in their mission statements and how that may reflect the work environments and products.
