Good Statistical Practice: Magic or Process? (303790)

*Jennifer Van Mullekom, Virginia Tech

Keywords: statistical practice, collaboration, process, tools

As an industrial statistician for over 18 years, I was mentored by some amazing collaborators. They immediately knew how to run a meeting, ask the right questions, probe deeper for understanding, resolve conflict, communicate results clearly, etc. It almost seemed like magic! Over the years, I was able to incorporate their techniques and create my own statistical practice. Then, I changed careers and had to teach graduate students how to practice statistics in my new role as a university professor. Statistical practice was second nature to me. However, it was much more difficult than I anticipated to collect, organize, and convey the elements of good statistical practice to students. After considerable thought, a four phase process evolved which makes use of checklists, soft skills tools, spreadsheets, and more. This presentation will provide an overview of the process developed and the accompanying tools. As a result, students and early career attendees will be exposed to framework for develop their practice. Managers will be able to guide their employees with the framework and experienced collaborators will learn a few new tricks and tips to make them more effective.
