Storytelling

Telling the Story of Your Stats (303788)

*Jennifer Van Mullekom, Virginia Tech

Keywords: communication, collaboration, story, presentation

Stories and narratives have always been an integral part of our world. Through the years, journalists have discovered that while facts and numbers describe the severity of humanitarian crises, stories about individuals resonate with the audience and prompt action. Statisticians and data scientists can use storytelling to effectively connect to audiences at all levels to facilitate decision making in the face of uncertainty. This talk will discuss story telling frameworks to create structure and flow in a presentation. Story genres to facilitate audience engagement will also be covered. Each framework and genre will be accompanied by an example of use in the field of statistics. The material discussed is applicable to presenting both methodological research and analysis results to clients and collaborators.
