Graduate school teaches statisticians the intricacies of completing the analysis properly with very little emphasis on how to convey it to others. In fact, this is one of the initiatives of our incoming American Statistical Association President, Bob Rodriguez. So how do we as statisticians overcome this communication barrier? Some of us have been fortunate enough to work with great mentors in the area of communicating statistical results and others just develop creative techniques on their own. The purpose of this presentation is to transfer a portion of that body of knowledge to others in the field in the context of "real life" case studies. This talk demonstrates effective communication techniques with emphasis on the use of graphs, tables, maps, matrices, and trees in a presentation format. Each example will be presented in a typical statistical report format and then receive a communications "makeover" to provide a more effective transfer of knowledge. Guiding principles on effective communication of statistical results will also be summarized.
