External validation is the most widely accepted way to ensure the generalizability of any finding from a particular study. Here we discuss, using two case studies from gerontology (aging) research, some of the issues and challenges involved in external validation and how to address them. In this context, we also discuss the role of cross-validation and split-sample validation.
