Complex innovative designs (CID) are those that need clinical trial simulations in order to understand the operating characteristics. Many of these trials are viewed from the outside as just the completed trial design, but the most challenging aspect of these designs is their construction. In this talk I will walk through the process of constructing, designing, iterating, and finalizing CID trial designs. I will focus on the role of statisticians in this process, where the pitfalls are and which aspects of these trials are misunderstood.
