The overarching mission of the pharmaceutical industry is to develop medical products that can improve human health. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the enormous need for innovation in research and development to accelerate development of new drugs, vaccines, and medical devices. Working closely with scientists and clinical researchers, statisticians play a key strategic role in drug development, from discovery to clinical trials and post marketing surveillance. In this presentation, we will discuss several important statistical innovations that have greatly improved the efficiency of pharmaceutical development in recent years. Some examples include adaptive clinical trial designs, use of external data for regulatory decision making, and biomarker assessment for precision medicine. Through these examples, we will also highlight the leadership demonstrated by statisticians in the collaborative research environment.
