There are four constant elements to artful storytelling. Plot, the events of a story. Character, the who of a story. World, the environment of a story. And language, the words of a story. The primary objective for a well-controlled clinical trial remains its reproducibility many times with the same or statistically similar result. As clinical trials become increasingly complex with patient populations of unmet medical need, novel mechanisms of action, complicated endpoints and emerging technologies such as big data, AI, and other advanced analytics, conveying understandable trial results is requisite to the overall trajectory of a drug’s lifecycle. The elements of clinical trial science: objectives, methods, results and conclusions mirror that of a compelling story. Utilizing examples from a medical regulator’s experience, including from a public health emergency perspective in the setting of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ll further examine the impact of communicating data effectively and the makings of a good story.
