Wearable devices, such as accelerometers, can be used to quantify the physical ability to perform a series of pre-determined tasks during pain episodes. This objective quantification can be paired with ecological momentary assessment (EMA), which can provide both context about how and when pain episodes occur as well as subjective self-report information about the level of pain experienced. This combination of objective, subjective, and contextual information can be used to develop biomarkers of pain in specific scenarios.
