Among the main lessons learned from covid pandemic, are the necessity of transiting from a flat economy to a circular economy, which is mainly based on renewable energies. This work investigates how “circular economy” (CE) and “renewable energies” (RE) concepts are contextualized along 20 years of scientific research, comprising a period between years 2002 and 2021. The following questions are addressed 1) How CE and RE concepts are related each other. 2) On what direction research about CE and RE is leading? and 3) Which the future research trends for these topics are? A collection of journal articles from the digital library Scopus is collected. All included documents show at least one of the investigated terms (CE or RE), on the title, abstract or key words. Our analysis comprises the chronological evolving of the vocabulary, the most relevant topics and the future research trends. Results are helpful for governments, policy makers and decision makers in the fields of economy and renewable energies
